WB I-94 to be shut down all weekend for demolition of a bridge beam hit by semi truck

Published:

Westbound Interstate 94 will be shut down all weekend for the demolition of a bridge beam hit by a semi truck earlier this year.

I-94 between I-696 and Eight Mile Road in Macomb County, Michigan will close beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 18th and will reopen by 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 19th.

According to CBS News, MDOT crews will then return at a later date to complete additional bridge repairs, while final repairs to the bridge will not be made until 2026. Drivers will be detoured along westbound I-696, and southbound Gratiot Avenue and eastbound Eight Mile Road.

Several freeway ramps will also be closed during the project. These include:

  • Eastbound I-696 to westbound I-94.
  • 12 Mile Road to westbound I-94.
  • Eastbound and westbound 11 Mile Road to westbound I-94.
  • 10 Mile Road to westbound I-94.
  • Nine Mile Road to westbound I-94.

Authorities say the damage was caused by a flatbed semi truck hauling boom lift that struck a bridge beam on the overpass on September 26th. The truck driver received multiple citations for improper permitting and improper securement.
