Wisconsin I-90 rest area reopens with 70 truck parking spaces as part of $12.5 million project

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced the reopening of a rest area along I-90 near Sparta with significantly increased truck parking.

On November 3, WisDOT held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the rest area on westbound I-90 in Monroe County following reconstruction of the structure originally built in 1969. The facility is expected to fully open in the next few weeks.

Prior to construction, the rest area only offered 16 truck parking spaces. Now, the I-90 rest area offers 70 truck parking spaces as well as a staging area for oversized/overweight vehicles.

The facility upgrades also include new signs along I-90 to inform truck drivers of open parking spaces at the rest area.

Other upgrades include better lighting, dedicated indoor space for vending options, drinking fountains with water bottle fillers, and ADA-compliant restrooms.

Construction on the $12.5 million rest area upgrade project started in August 2024.

WisDOT is working to reconstruct two other rest areas in northeast Wisconsin along I-43 near Denmark and Maribel, with opening dates slated for summer 2026.

“We’re so excited to open this modernized safety rest area showcasing enhancements to traveler safety and accessibility,” WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said. “Interstate 90 plays a vital role in the movement of freight and passengers across Wisconsin, and this safety rest area welcomes travelers, truck drivers and families with a safe, convenient and accessible place to take a break along their journey. This safety rest area exemplifies our commitment to building a better transportation system for everyone here in Wisconsin.”
