WYDOT set to reopen westbound Green River Tunnel in November after fatal pileup

WYDOT

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) says that work is on track to reopen the westbound Green River Tunnel next month after months of closure due to a fiery crash.

On October 16, WYDOT announced that the westbound I-80 tunnel near Green River should reopen by the end of November 2025.

When the tunnel reopens to traffic, drivers should expect reduced speeds. WYDOT says that the lighting infrastructure installation will not be completed by the time the tunnel reopens for the winter season.

“Once the westbound tunnel is reopened, locals and interstate traffic should be prepared for an estimated weeklong detour of eastbound traffic through Green River as crews remove the concrete barrier, reset cable barrier and remove all the traffic control in the eastbound lanes,” WYDOT said.

In the weeks to come, crews will be constructing striping, guardrails, and temporary traffic control and signage.

The westbound Green River Tunnel has been closed since February 14, 2025, after a fiery 26 vehicle pileup occurred within the tunnel, killing three people and causing major damage to the structure.
