Wyoming Highway Patrol tells drivers to yield to emergency vehicles following trooper’s crash with big rig on I-80

The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) is asking drivers to yield to emergency vehicles following a recent crash involving a patrol vehicle and a semi truck.

The crash took place at 11:38 a.m. on August 26 as a WHP trooper was responding to a previous collision on I-80 at mile marker 201.

“The trooper attempted to turn into the median from the right shoulder and was struck by a westbound semi-truck in the left-hand lane on the left side of the patrol vehicle,” WHP stated.

The trooper escaped the crash without serious injuries but was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

“The semi-truck driver was not injured, and no citations were issued,” said WHP.

“The Wyoming Highway Patrol reminds everyone to yield to emergency vehicles. Failure to do so can result not only in delays in responses, potentially threatening the lives of those involved in the emergency, but also citations and fines of at least $235. In Wyoming, when an emergency vehicle is passing by with signals such as lights or sirens, motorists must yield the right-of-way by moving over, clearing the intersection, or stopping until the vehicle has passed. On a multi-lane highway motorists must move over while on a two lane highway, they must slow down to 20 mph below the posted limit,” state troopers said.
