111 workers forced to transfer or quit as Walmart fulfillment center closes for automation-centered restructuring

111 workers will have the choice to transfer or quit after the closure of a Walmart fulfillment center outside of Chicago. 

Walmart Inc. issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification on Friday, March 27th. The Matteson, Illinois facility is set to close on May 29th. 

According to Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette, Walmart is offering a $7,500 transfer bonus and relocation assistance for any employees that agree to work at another facility. Workers have a 90 day transition period to find another job.

A spokesperson for Walmart says that the closing of the Matteson facility is part of a restructuring effort aiming for efficiency during the company’s transition to an automation-centered company.
