Ambassador Bridge falls from top spot for cross-border truck traffic

The Ambassador Bridge no longer holds the top spot for cross-border truck traffic between Canada and the United States, data shows.

Data from the Bridge and Tunnel Operators Association shows that the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia had the largest number of commercial vehicle crossings in 2025 – more than 2.1 million as compared to 1.9 million across the Ambassador Bridge in the same year. This cross-border truck traffic trend is seeming to continue into 2026, with 299,000 Blue Water Bridge crossings in 2026 so far as compared to 286,000 across the Ambassador Bridge, reported CTV.

Another factor that may contribute to the traffic change are the toll amounts at each location. Commercial trucks crossing the Ambassador Bridge run at $27 per axle, while Blue Water Bridge tolls only charge $7 per axle.

When it comes to passenger vehicle crossings, the Blue Water Bridge comes in last at 1.6 million crossings as compared to the Ambassador Bridge at 3.5 million.
