Bobtail truck driver found sleeping on US-93 blows ‘crazy high’ BAC, Arizona troopers say

A truck driver found sleeping on an Arizona highway was discovered to be more than four times the legal limit for commercial vehicles drivers, officials said.

On July 11, 2026, Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Highway Patrol troopers with the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to reports of a “concerning semi” on US-93 in the Bagdad area.

“A bobtail semi was stopped in the travel lanes with the driver sleeping. The vehicle then continued southbound on US-93 while swerving in and out of the lanes and into oncoming traffic. An ambulance followed the vehicle and provided updates,” AZDPS said.

The bobtail truck stopped to the right and an AZDPS trooper arrived on the scene.

The trooper suspected impairment due to the truck driver’s “reckless driving behavior.”

Officials said that the driver refused field sobriety tests but did provide a preliminary breath test that revealed a .197 BAC, calling the result “a crazy high DUI.”

The truck driver was “criminally cited for DUI and turned over to a responsible party.”

“Legal limit for CMVs is .04. This driver was more than four times that limit. Truck responsibly and save drinking for when you’re off the clock. Only driving sober saves lives,” AZDPS said.
