Bridge strike ends in crash with a garbage truck on South Side of Chicago

A bridge strike ended in a crash with a garbage truck for one truck driver on the South Side of Chicago on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened on January 5th on the outbound Bishop Ford Expressway near 127th Street at around 4:30 p.m.

According to ABC7, a semi truck hit the Norfolk Southern Bridge as it traveled along the expressway, causing the trailer to come loose from the truck. The empty trailer then overturned and landed on the front end of a garbage truck traveling in the center lane of the highway.

Both vehicles came to a stop against a concrete barrier. One of the drivers was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. The other driver refused treatment. It is unclear which driver was injured.

Traffic was reduced to one lane as crews worked to clear the scene. The freeway was reopened by 6:35 p.m. No further information has been released.
