CHP calls out truck driver for getting stuck while trying to avoid chain control on Donner Summit

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is reminding commercial vehicle drivers of the consequences of failing to obey chain law on a snowy roadway.

On January 4, 2026, CHP’s Truckee Division took to social media to share a truck driver’s tough day amid heavy snowfall on Donner Summit as an example of why it’s so important to obey California’s chain law.

Troopers shared images of the semi truck stuck on the snow-packed roadway captioned “when you try to avoid chain control… but end up being towed with hefty fines instead.”

“Slow it down, carry chains, and plan ahead… Donner always collects its dues,” said CHP.
