CHP commercial vehicle officer calls out driver for towing car on rims

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) put the brakes on an unsafe attempt to tow a car without rear tires.

The “dangerous” tow job was spotted by a commercial vehicle officer in the Visalia area, according to a July 29 statement from CHP.

Troopers noted that the vehicle was “being towed on the highway without rear tires—riding directly on the wheels!”

The tow attempt “directly violates California Vehicle Code (VC) 27465(b)” and created a dangerous situation for others on the roadway, state police said.

“It is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle on the highway with tires that are worn down to the fabric/cords—or, in this extreme case, missing the rubber entirely!” said CHP.

Troopers also pointed out that towing a vehicle on the rear rims could result in damage to the roadway, loss of traction and control, and debris and road hazards for other drivers.
