The California Highway Patrol (CHP) put the brakes on a commercial truck hauling a too-heavy load of produce in Merced County.
On July 8, 2026, CHP Officer Briones was performing a commercial vehicle inspection when “he noticed the tomatoes were piled well above the tops of the tubs, leading him to believe the truck was overweight.”
The truck was weighed and found to be “well over the legal maximum” weight for this combination of 80,000 pounds. CHP did not provide details on the exact weight of the truck or any enforcement action taken.

Most people see a truck full of tomatoes and keep driving. Officer Briones saw something different,” CHP said in a social media post reminding truckers of the dangers of operating an overweight commercial vehicle.

“Overloaded commercial vehicles require more distance to stop, place additional stress on brakes and tires, affect handling, and increase wear on our roads. When something goes wrong with an overloaded truck, the consequences can be severe. It’s tomato season in the Central Valley, and you’ll see thousands of loads traveling through Merced County. That’s why CHP officers conduct commercial vehicle enforcement stops every day. Catching problems before they become crashes is one of the most important parts of the job,” CHP said.
