CVSA blitz targeting unsafe commercial vehicle drivers starts Sunday

Drivers should expect to see increased law enforcement presence next week as the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Safe Driver Week campaign kicks off.

Operation Safe Driver Week will take place throughout North America July 12 — 18, 2026.

During the week-long effort, law enforcement monitor commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers for unsafe driving behaviors and issue warnings or citations to offenders.

Unsafe driving behaviors include speeding, distracted driving, fatigued/drowsy driving, following too closely, impaired driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, unsafe lane changes, and disregarding traffic signals.

The focus area for Operation Safe Driver Week 2026 is reckless, careless or dangerous driving. According to the CVSA, “any person who drives a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is driving recklessly. Careless/dangerous driving is defined as operating a vehicle without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or people on the road.”

During last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement issued 3,230 warnings and 1,839 tickets/citations to commercial motor vehicle drivers, and 345 warnings and 665 tickets/citations to passenger vehicle drivers for various unsafe driving behaviors.
