Driver found with blood in cab after wreck murdered cousin trying to help him get mental health treatment

A truck driver found with blood in his cab after crashing into a ditch has been accused of murdering his cousin who was keeping him company on his last run before helping him to get mental health treatment.

The most recent details about last week’s incident were released at a 3 p.m. news conference on Tuesday, January 20th held by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

According to CBS 12, SLCSO Sheriff Richard Del Toro informed the public that truck driver Olson Jean was traveling with his cousin, 32-year-old Wendy Moncion, on his last run from Georgia to Florida. Moncion was tagging along to keep Jean company and to help him find mental health treatment once they returned home. Jean’s wife says that the driver had been struggling with mental health issues and had been acting erratically prior to the incident.

Moncion’s family last heard from him on January 15th around 6:40 p.m., leading police to believe he was murdered some time after that. The SLCSO discovered Moncion after they were called to a Pilot Truck Stop on reports of a suspicious person.

“The caller provided clothing description advised that a Black male was observed lying on the ground and rolling around on the west side of the roadway behaving erratically,” Del Toro said.

Police arrived to find Jean walking along South Rock Road, not far from where his semi truck was wrecked in a roadside ditch. During the investigation of the wrecked truck, officers noticed blood inside of the cab, so they secured a search warrant to investigate further.

“Throughout this encounter, [Jean] provided inconsistent statements regarding his actions,” Sheriff Del Toro said. Jean was initially charged with Resisting an Officer Without Violence.

Police soon obtained a search warrant and discovered Moncion’s body hidden beneath the sleeper bed. It was determined that he died by gunshot wound to the back of the head. Investigators also recovered a Palmetto State Armory PA-15 rifle, a Springfield Hellcat handgun, and magazines matching the handgun in a nearby canal. Officers believe Jean placed those items intentionally.

Jean was arrested on January 17th on charges of first degree murder with a firearm,  tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice without violence. His motive is still being investigated.
