The truck driver hit by a commercial jet while driving on the New Jersey Turnpike is done with trucking after the bizarre accident, his father says.
Truck driver Warren Boardler Jr. was driving a bakery truck on the same route along the New Jersey Turnpike he drove five days a week for seven years when he was hit by the landing gear of a low flying Boeing 767 operated by United on Sunday, May 3rd. One of the plane’s landing gear tires went through the windshield of the bakery delivery truck, causing glass to injure Boardler Jr’s arm and hand. Now, his family says the driver is in “total shock” after the bizarre accident.
“Right now, we are blessed to have him. He’s alive,” his dad, Boardley Sr. said to CBS. “The mental things he’s going through, and the physical stuff, all of that should pass, the physical at least. The mental will stay with you a long time.”
“He couldn’t believe it. He called me and told me that a plane had hit him. I couldn’t believe it,” Boardley Sr. continued. “Out of all the things in the world, a plane? You can’t prepare for that. You can prepare for another driver doing something, but a plane? That’s unbelievable.”
“Nobody ever expects an airplane to drop out of the sky and hit a truck, especially with my child in it.”
Boardley Jr. has already hired an attorney who is reviewing the evidence. The details regarding a possible case are not clear.
“The investigation will examine multiple factors, including flight operations, meteorological conditions, human performance, crew resource management, aircraft performance, and air traffic control,” the NTSB said in a statement Monday.
As of now, Boardley Sr. says that his son is likely done with trucking will not be driving a truck again.
