The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is investigating an altercation at the fuel pumps at a Flying J truck stop that left a man with a serious injury this week.
Shortly after 5 p.m. on January 13, 2026, CCSO responded to the Flying J Travel Center located at 24279 Rogers Clark Boulevard in Ruther Glen, Virginia, for an assault reported in the fuel island area.
Deputies found an adult male on the scene lying on the ground after he “suffered the loss of the upper portion of his right ring finger as a result of the altercation.”
“The investigation revealed that the incident began as a verbal dispute between multiple individuals at the fuel pumps, which escalated into a physical confrontation between two adult males. During the altercation, the victim’s finger was bitten, resulting in the traumatic injury,” CCSO said.
Police searched the area and “were able to locate the severed portion of the victim’s finger on the asphalt near the fuel pumps.”
The victim and the severed finger were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
CCSO said that witnesses attempted to intervene in the altercation and separate the two males involved.
After reviewing video evidence and taking statements from witnesses, deputies arrested Dedrick McGuire, 54, of Bristow, Oklahoma, on a charge of Malicious Wounding.
After being booked into the Pamunkey Regional Jail, McGuire was released on secure bond.
The incident remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact CCSO.
