FMCSA knocks 14 ELDs off list off approved devices for failure to meet federal requirements

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) removed more than a dozen electronic logging devices (ELDs) from the agency’s list of approved devices.

On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, FMCSA placed the following fourteen ELDs on the “Revoked Devices” list for failure to meet minimum federal requirements.

“Meeting federal requirements isn’t optional. If a device falls short, it will be removed. We enforce the standard fairly and firmly because safety depends on it,” said FMCSA Administrator Derek D. Barrs.

FMCSA directs carriers using one of the revoked ELDs to take the following steps:

  1. Discontinue using the revoked ELDs and revert to paper logs or logging software to record required hours of service data.
  2. Replace the revoked ELDs with compliant ELDs from the Registered Devices list before May 4, 2026.

Prior to May 4, 2026, safety personnel are encouraged not to cite drivers using one of the revoked ELDs for No record of duty status” or “Failing to use a registered ELD.” Officers should ask to see a paper log book, logging software, or the ELD display to confirm hours-of-service data.

After May 4, carriers who continue to use the revoked devices listed above will be considered as operating without an ELD. Safety personnel should issue a citation and place the driver out-of-service.
