Georgia extends tax relief on diesel and gas as pain at the pump continues

Drivers fueling up in Georgia will receive additional relief from the state’s fuel tax ahead of the Memorial Day holiday.

On May 15, 2026, Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp signed an order to provide motorists and truckers with an additional two weeks of relief from the state’s fuel tax.

This follows up on previous action taken by Kemp to provide drivers with relief from high fuel prices due to the military conflict in Iran.

On March 20, Kemp passed a bill to suspend the state motor fuel tax for a 60 day period. That tax relief was set to expire at the end of the day on May 19.

The new fuel tax suspension will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on May 20 and run through June 3.

Kemp declared a State of Emergency due to “Acute Consumer Price Shock” in order to extend the fuel tax holiday for another two weeks.

Georgia’s current motor fuel excise tax is 33.3 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon for diesel.

“As Georgia families prepare for the Memorial Day travel weekend, they should not feel blindsided by prices at the gas pump,” said Kemp. “Along with our partners in the legislature, we’ve remained committed to giving hardworking Georgians relief wherever able, and this action is another fulfillment of that promise.”
