ICE declares detainer for Ukrainian driver sentenced to only two years after fatal stop light crash

An ICE detainer has been issued for a Ukrainian truck driver sentenced for a fatal crash at a stop light in Alabama over a year ago. 

Truck driver Adrii Dmyterko received a sentence of two years in prison last month after a rear end crash at a stop light in Grove Hill, Alabama in May 2025 that killed two and injured four more. Dmyterko was believed to be on the phone at the time of the crash. There are multiple lawsuits filed against the driver by victims of the incident.

Dmyterko was issued a work visa in 2024, which has since been revoked. He was initially charged with manslaughter, but later pleaded guilty to only two misdemeanor counts of criminally negligent homicide. He has been sentenced to a total of two years in jail, with a jail credit of one year and 65 days for time already served. 

Now, ICE has lodged a detainer requesting that Alabama not release Dmyterko for any reason, and instead turn him over to ICE custody. 

“ICE has lodged a detainer asking Alabama officials to cooperate with us and turn him over when his sentence is complete so that we can remove him from our country,” said Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis in a statement.
