The Idaho State Police (ISP) shared a video explaining the state’s new speed limit for commercial trucks going into effect today.
A new law going into effect on July 1, 2026, eliminates the speed differential for commercial trucks so that all vehicles have the same posted speed limit on Idaho roadways.
Previously, Idaho required vehicles with 5 or more axles weighing over 26,000 pounds to travel 10 m.p.h. under the speed limit for passenger vehicles.
“So July 1st, this is essentially going away,” ISP said. “So in non-urban areas, those heavier vehicles will be able to go 80 m.p.h. just like the other vehicles on the roadway.”
Troopers say that drivers still maintain the responsibility to drive to conditions.
ISP also noted that the speed limit change won’t impact truckers who are governed at a certain speed.
