Indianapolis firefighters call out semi truck driver who ran over water supply line for ‘total lack of awareness’

The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) said that a semi truck driver hampered efforts to respond to a structure fire on Friday.

On July 31, 2026, IFD responded to a fire at a commercial space located at 333 S Franklin Road in Indianapolis. The building houses several businesses including a recycling company.

IFD said crews battled “maze-like” zero-visibility conditions to locate the source of the fire on the northeast side of the building inside a trash compactor.

No injuries were reported.

While the firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about 34 minutes, they said that their job was made harder by a semi truck driver at the scene.

“One point of note that added an additional layer of difficulty to the incident was the total lack of awareness displayed by a semi-driver who entered the parking lot and recklessly drove over our supply line despite the obvious and active fireground situation presented in front of him. His actions busted two sections of 5″ hose and forced firefighters to expend unnecessary effort in re-establishing their initial water supply and could have seriously affected the crews on the inside. The unpredictability that can occur with a fire deep inside a large commercial structure is enough to manage as it is… without having your water supply cut off by someone purposely driving over your supply line,” IFD said.
