Louisiana lifts I-20 commercial vehicle ban put into place in 2023

This week, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced that a years-long commercial vehicle travel ban on I-20 in Bossier City has been lifted.

Since December of 2023, trucks have been forbidden from using I-20 in the work zone from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive in Bossier City, Louisiana, due to safety concerns over the narrowed lane widths on multiple bridges along the interstate.

On May 19, 2026, the Louisiana DOTD announced that the I-20 truck ban is officially lifted, and officials say that “drivers of commercial motor vehicles such as 18-wheelers and school buses are now able to legally drive through the I-20 work zone in Bossier City.”

During the years-long I-20 truck ban, commercial vehicle were required to take I-220 as an alternate route.

Truck drivers who did not comply with the I-20 truck ban were subject to citations and enforcement. Louisiana troopers reported crashes in the work zone caused by truckers who used I-20 during the ban.

“DOTD appreciates the patience and understanding of CMV drivers as construction progressed throughout the I-20 project,” the agency said.

Louisiana DOTD says that final work items on the I-20 construction project are expected to wrap up in late-May/early June 2026, weather permitting.
