A former employee pleaded guilty to charges related to the embezzlement of millions of dollars from a freight brokerage in Austin, Texas.
On June 29, 2026, Mitchell David Slentz, 34, pleaded guilty in an Austin federal court to one count of wire fraud and one count of engaging in monetary transactions with criminally derived proceeds, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.
Officials say that Slentz embezzled more than $3.2 million from his former employer, Austin Freight Systems (AFS).
Slentz was employed in accounting at AFS, and in that role he was tasked with financial reporting and internal controls, including submitting requests to JP Morgan Chase Bank to make payments to AFS’s vendors.
From around October 2023 and continuing at least until about March 2025, officials say Slentz misappropriated 147 payments and deposited approximately $3,277,937.35 into his personal bank accounts.
The “criminally derived money” was used in part to pay off student loan debt, authorities said.
The investigation into financial accounts controlled by Slentz revealed “additional fraudulent activities.”
Investigators learned that Slentz “gambled extensively on an online gambling platform, depositing and/or winning more than $1 million through online gambling.”
This case was investigated by the FBI Austin White Collar Crime Task Force.
