Man sentenced for using semi trucks to smuggle $15 million in drugs from U.S. into Canada in a single month

A Canadian national was sentenced to decades in prison for using semi trucks to smuggle millions of dollars worth of drugs from the U.S. into Canada during a roughly one-month span in 2022.

On July 9, 2026, Guramrit Sidhu, 63, of Brampton, Ontario, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

In March 2026, Sidhu pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. He has been in federal custody since October 2024.

According to a plea agreement, Sidhu acted as the leader of a criminal organization from September 2020 to February 2023.

Between September 13, 2022, to October 24, 2022, Sidhu coordinated the transport of eight different drug loads containing a total of 1,153 pounds of methamphetamine and 765 pounds of cocaine. The drugs were worth approximately $15 million to $17 million.

These drug loads were seized by law enforcement.

“After buying the bulk quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine in the U.S., Sidhu arranged for the narcotics’ transportation into Canada via long-haul semi-trucks for further distribution. Sidhu provided telephone numbers and serial numbers on bills of currency for couriers to use as a “token” for identification purposes during the delivery and transportation of the cocaine and methamphetamine,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Sidhu is the eighth defendant to plead guilty in this case, with other defendants receiving federal prison terms ranging from 27 months to 108 months.

Investigating agencies include the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Interagency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force (LA IMPACT), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, United States Customs and Border Protection, and law enforcement authorities in Mexico.
