The Indiana Toll Road reopened following a pileup crash involving dozens of vehicles near Elkhart on Wednesday afternoon.
Shortly before 4 p.m. on January 14, Indiana State Police (ISP) was notified about a crash involving three vehicles in the eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 94, two miles east of Elkhart, Indiana.

Troopers say that following this initial crash, additional crashes occurred in the same area, resulting in a pileup blocking all eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road.
“Multiple troopers responded and found multiple crashes involving semis as well as passenger vehicles that were blocking eastbound lanes, in the center median, and at least one that crossed westbound lanes and came to a rest in the ditch on the north side of the interstate,” ISP said.
A total of 30 vehicles were involved in the pileup.
Several injuries were reported, including a semi truck driver who was entrapped for several hours before being extricated and transported to a hospital. None of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening.
State police noted that it was snowing heavily at the time of the crashes, resulting in limited visibility.
All lanes of the Indiana Toll Road reopened around 8 p.m. on January 14 following “a massive undertaking” to clear the roadway of crashed vehicles.
