The North Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) issued a warning to the trucking community about an uptick in thieves taking E-ZPass transponders from parked trucks and using the devices to incur fraudulent toll charges.
In the April 29 alert, police urged truck drivers to take precautions in the North Brunswick, New Jersey, area.
Police say that E-ZPass devices “are being removed from parked trucks and work vehicles, often during overnight hours.”
The thieves are targeting devices on windshields or dashboards in unattended trucks. The stolen transponders are then being used to incur fraudulent toll charges.
Police say that drivers may not notice that a theft occurred because the devices are sometimes replaced with other stolen transponders.
“Please routinely verify that the transponders in your vehicles are the correct ones and actually yours. You may be responsible for any tolls and fees racked up on your transponders, so please be aware,” NBPD said.
Truckers are advised to store E-ZPass devices out of sight in a secure compartment and to park in well-lit, high traffic areas.
If your transponder is stolen, police say that you should report the incident, contact E-ZPass customer service to deactivate the device, and review your toll account and dispute unauthorized charges.
