One dead after beam is knocked off bridge by semi truck on 10 Freeway

One motorist is dead after a beam was knocked off of a bridge along the 10 Freeway in California on Thursday morning.

The accident happened at about 3 a.m. at the 15 Freeway connector along the 10 Freeway in Ontario, California.

According to ABC 7, a semi truck was hauling an excavator westbound on the 10 Freeway when it struck the 15 Freeway connector bridge. The strike knocked a beam loose from the bridge and caused it to fall onto the roadway, where it struck a Toyota Camry. A Honda Accord then struck the fallen beam.

Both motorists “were transferred to [Arrowhead Regional Medical Center] by emergency personnel for major injuries, and unfortunately one of the drivers passed away,” said CHP Ofc. Joe Garcia. The motorist who died in the accident has only been identified as a woman.

The 50-year-old unnamed truck driver stayed at the scene following the incident. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. The freeway remained closed until Thursday afternoon. It has since been reopened.
