Passenger with no CDL drove while truck driver slept, crashed into ditch along I-80 in Iowa

Iowa troopers discovered numerous violations while responding to a semi truck that crashed into a ditch along I-80.

This past week, an Iowa State Patrol (ISP) trooper responded to a semi truck partially in a ditch along I-80.

The trooper discovered that the truck had been driven by a passenger with no commercial driver’s license (CDL) who “‘just wanted to go home’ and started driving the truck while the actual driver was asleep in the sleeper.”

The trooper then discovered that the CDL of the actual truck driver had been suspended.

“Subsequently, they did not return home as soon as the passenger had hoped,” said ISP’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit in a June 6 post.

The trooper issued “numerous violations and out-of-service violations” following an inspection.
