The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) plans to restrict certain types of commercial vehicles from several interstates on Tuesday ahead of winter weather conditions.
With freezing precipitation predicted for Tuesday, PennDOT announced travel restrictions set to start in the early morning hours.
Starting at 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Tier 1 restrictions will be in place on the following roadways:
- I-80 from I-79 to Exit 173
- I-99 entire length
Starting at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Tier 1 restrictions will be in place on the following roadways:
- I-80 from Exit 173 to the New Jersey border
- I-81 from I-78 to the New York border
- I-84 entire length
- I-180 from I-80 to U.S. 220
- I-380 entire length
- U.S. 322 from I-99 to I-81
The following vehicle types are not permitted to travel during Tier 1 restrictions:
- Tractors without trailers
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
- Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV
- Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers
- Recreational vehicles/motorhomes
- School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches without available chains or another approved Alternate Traction Device on board
- Motorcycles
Commercial vehicles not restricted from travel by Tier 1 restrictions must keep to the right lane on affected roadways, PennDOT said.
