Pickup driver hauling dirt ordered off the road for no CDL, med card, or trailer brakes, Arizona DPS says

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Highway Patrol took a pickup driver to task after discovering several serious violations during a traffic stop in Tempe.

On June 26, 2026, the AZDPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit stopped a pickup truck with an attached trailer on AZ-202 near the Arizona State University campus in Tempe.

Officials said that the pickup driver did not have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or a USDOT medical card.

Additionally, AZDPS said that “none of the trailer brakes worked, leaving only the power unit to stop the 14,900-pound trailer fully loaded with dirt and debris. Exposed hubcaps and a missing emergency brake cable were among other violations.”

The pickup truck driver was cited and the vehicle was placed out-of-service.

Officials reminded drivers that “No CDL = No commercial driving.”
