Police file 26 charges after stopping same commercial vehicle twice in one day for ‘handwritten plate’ and more

Dozens of charges were filed after Canadian police stopped the same “unsafe commercial motor vehicle” twice on the same Ontario highway in a single day.

At 5:00 a.m. on March 3, 2026, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Temagami Division responded to Highway 11 for a report about debris on the roadway caused by a commercial vehicle.

A Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Level I inspection was performed on the commercial vehicle, including a suspended driver’s license, improper trailer plate, and nonfunctioning brakes.

Police placed the vehicle and driver out-of-service.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on the same day, an officer with OPP’s Temiskaming Division located the same commercial vehicle in operation on Highway 11 “with a handwritten plate and unresolved defects.”

Police say that charges include insecure load laid against the second driver and the Alberta-based company include unsafe vehicle operation, improper brakes, careless driving, and permit violations.

OPP said that a total of 26 charges were filed.

“The OPP reminds all commercial drivers and companies: maintain vehicles in safe condition and comply with regulations to keep Ontario highways safe,” OPP’s North East Region said in a news release detailing the incident.
