Post-crash inspection shows multiple violations on semi truck that lost braking capability on New York roadway

Published:

The New York State Police (NYSP) found several serious issues during a post-crash inspection on a semi truck that experienced brake failure.

Troopers say that on April 28, 2026, a semi truck crashed while traveling through Yorktown, New York.

The truck had a gross weight of approximately 72,000 pounds when it lost braking capability and left the roadway, crashing into a wooded area.

Following the crash NYSP’s Troop K Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to the scene.

Troopers said the post-crash inspection showed that:

  • 8.5 out of 10 brakes were defective
  • Trailer had not been inspected since 2023

NYSP shared video showing the “trailer brake pads missing rollers and return springs, rendering the brakes inoperable.”

“Routine inspections and proper brake maintenance are critical—failures like this put everyone on the road at risk,” state police said.
