The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Highway Patrol recently arrested a truck driver for drunk driving after a close call with a trooper’s cruiser on I-10.
On July 2, 2026, troopers were notified of a commercial vehicle operating erratically on southbound I-10 in the Phoenix area.
“The truck swerved across lanes and failed to yield when stopped and nearly struck another Trooper’s patrol vehicle. The vehicle eventually yielded near Elliot Road,” AZDPS said.

When troopers interacted with the truck driver, they spotted signs of impairment, including “confusion and an odor of alcohol on his breath.”
A field sobriety test revealed impairment, and the driver’s preliminary breath test showed a .227 BAC.
Troopers arrested the driver for DUI.
During a vehicle inventory, troopers located “bottles of red wine and a water bottle that wine had been poured into.”
“Drinking and driving in a regular passenger car is already dangerous. Drinking and driving a massive vehicle infinitely increases the risk of life-threatening collisions. Make the smart choice to leave the drinking out of the cab and off duty and help keep our communities safe,” officials said.
