Semi truck out-of-service after CHP finds ‘serious defect’ on fifth wheel plate

Troopers with California Highway Patrol (CHP) are reminding truckers to inspect their equipment after a recent inspection uncovered serious damage and corrosion to a tractor’s fifth wheel plate.

In a March 22 social media post, CHP’s Cordelia Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility said that a “Commercial Vehicle Inspection Specialist (CVIS) located a serious defect on this tractor’s fifth wheel plate. Corrosion combined with repeated kingpin contact created a 3-inch diameter hole in the plate.”

Troopers said that the defect was serious enough to remove the truck from the road.

“Always inspect the fifth wheel surface for wear, cracks, and corrosion. Regular inspections and addressing corrosion early are essential to prevent issues like this,” said CHP.

State police used the incident to remind truckers to inspect their vehicles, and to pay particular attention to the fifth wheel.
