Semi truck seized at Texas border crossing after officers find 39 live pythons

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently intercepted dozens of live snakes from a semi truck in Laredo, Texas.

The snakes were discovered on March 5, 2026, at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, according to a CBP news release.

CBP says that officers encountered a 2021 Peterbilt tractor traveling from the U.S. to Mexico.

The Peterbilt truck and truck driver were selected for a secondary inspection.

During the inspection, CBP officers discovered 39 live pythons concealed on the commercial vehicle.

Officials say that the driver had previously given a negative declaration for prohibited goods.

The pythons were handed over to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agents.

CBP seized the tractor and trailer.

A fine of $34,824 was issued for export violations.

“The interception of live pythons at the World Trade Bridge highlights the vigilance and dedication of our CBP officers in enforcing laws that protect both our borders and our environment,” said Port Director Alberto Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “CBP remains committed to preventing the illegal importation and exportation of wildlife and ensuring compliance with all federal regulations.”
