Semi truck strikes I-80 bridge in southeastern Wyoming

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is responding to a Monday bridge strike in Rawlins.

The bridge strike occurred around 9 a.m. on July 20 on I-80 at Exit 214/ Higley Blvd. in Rawlins, Wyoming.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol said that a semi truck was westbound on I-80 when it veered off the interstate into the median. The truck hit the cable barrier and eastbound guardrail before hitting the concrete bridge support.

One of the supports in the median was “completely destroyed,” troopers said.

“The trailer of the semi-truck came to a stop with the other three supports imbedded in it. The tractor portion broke free and continued out from under the bridge on top of the guardrail,” said WHP

The truck driver and co-driver survived with non life-threatening injuries.

The bridge will remain closed until it is assessed by an engineering team for safety.

I-80 traffic is being routed around the interchange onto the interchange ramp.

The crash scene remains under active investigation, and drivers should expect delays.
