Semi truck towed for registration expired since 2024, CHP says

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is reminding truckers that commercial vehicles are not exempt from registration requirements following a recent traffic stop in Merced County.

On the morning of June 17, 2026, CHP Officer Briones initiated a traffic stop on a commercial vehicle traveling in Livingston, California, for expired registration.

During the traffic stop, Officer Briones discovered that the truck’s registration had been expired since 2024.

CHP had the truck towed from the scene.

CHP’s Merced Division used the incident to remind truckers of the consequences of failing to keep up with registration requirements.

“Most people associate commercial vehicle enforcement with weigh stations, inspections, and logbooks. However, maintaining current registration is just as important and is required for commercial vehicles operating on California’s roadways. Today’s stop serves as a reminder that commercial vehicles are not exempt from registration requirements. In fact, many of the requirements placed on commercial vehicles are more stringent than those for passenger vehicles,” state police said.
