Sentencing for the truck driver involved in the mass death of 53 migrants in a hot trailer has been delayed for several months over weather and technical related difficulties.
Homero Zamorano Jr. drove the tractor trailer used to smuggle 67 migrants into San Antonio, Texas on June 27th, 2022. Zamorano Jr. was scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday, February 18th.
According to KSAT, a witness was expected to fly into San Antonio from New Mexico, but severe weather prevented the flight from taking off in time for the sentencing. The witness was unable to connect to the court room via Zoom, forcing a delay in the sentencing. An exact date has not been determined, but Court Judge Orlando Garcia says that the delay will be between two and three months.
Zamorano Jr. will be the third man to be sentenced for the mass death. Two other men were found guilty last year – Felipe Orduna-Torres was sentenced to two life sentences, and Armando Gonzales-Ortega was sentenced to over 87 years in prison. Zamorano is facing a life sentence.
