Sixteen drivers cited for using cell phones while passing scene of fatal crash on I-10 in Arizona

More than a dozen drivers were ticketed for using a handheld device while passing a crash scene on I-10 in Arizona.

On July 26, 2026, Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a fatal collision on I-10 near Willcox.

While responding to the crash, “troopers observed traffic backing up and numerous near-miss collisions caused by drivers who stopped or slowed to film the scene while driving.”

Troopers responded to the “lookie-loos” with enforcement action.

Sixteen drivers were ticketed for violating Arizona’s hands-free statute.

An additional driver was arrested for DUI.

Officials used the incident as a reminder of the dangers of distracted driving.

“Distracted driving means you’re not paying attention to any split-second decision needed to be made. Use hands-free technology installed in your car, your smartphone assistant, a passenger, or just put the phone away until you get to your destination. It can wait!” said AZDPS.
