A bill preventing any undocumented immigrants from operating a commercial vehicle in the state of Tennessee is heading to the Governor’s desk for the final signature.
House Bill 1706 passed in the House on Tuesday, April 22nd. The bill will now head to the Governor’s desk.
According to 10News, the bill would aim misdemeanor charges at undocumented immigrants driving a CMV in the state of Tennessee. This misdemeanor includes those with CDLs from out of state.
The bill would also make employers and state officials who knowingly offer driving positions to or issue CDLs to undocumented immigrants liable for any personal injury or property damage caused by the undocumented immigrant operating a CMV. The bill also requires law enforcement to notify federal immigration officials if they arrest any undocumented immigrants under the new bill.
If signed by Governor Lee, the bill will take effect on July 1st, 2026.
