Tennessee railroad bridge collapse blamed on ‘commercial vehicle accident’

A roadway in Fayette County, Tennessee, is closed indefinitely following a commercial vehicle bridge strike that collapsed the structure.

On May 11, 2026, the Fayette County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) announced that a portion of Ballard Road north of Highway 57 in Piperton, Tennessee is closed until further notice.

Officials pointed to a “a commercial vehicle accident that damaged the railroad bridge, causing a collapse.”

As a result of the bridge collapse, Norfolk Southern has halted train traffic along the route.

No injuries were reported.
