Texas trooper killed in crash with semi truck while initiating traffic stop

A Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDPS) Highway Patrol trooper was killed in a crash with a semi truck in Childress County on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on June 17.

According to TXDPS, 27-year-old Trooper Sergio Romero “was attempting to conduct a traffic stop along US-287 near Childress … when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of him, causing his patrol unit to collide with the vehicle.”

Romero died at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.

“Today, we grieve the loss of one of our own,” said DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “Trooper Sergio Romero served the people of his community and the state of Texas with courage, integrity and selfless devotion. Our hearts break alongside his family, friends, fellow Troopers and all who loved him. We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made in service of his fellow Texans.”

Romero is survived by wife, Francisca, and two young sons.
