A tractor trailer hauling squid lost its trailer in Rhode Island on Sunday, leaving a very smelly mess behind.
The accident happened on August 16th at the intersection of Point Judith and Galilee Escape Roads in Narragansett, Rhode Island at 9:27 a.m.
The Narragansett Police Department reports that the tractor trailer was turning onto Point Judith Road when the trailer came unhooked, causing it to overturn and spill a load of squid heading to a processing plant.
The spill caused “significant traffic disruptions” and an “extended road closure” due to the spilled squid and the trailer left blocking all lanes of travel. The truck driver and their passenger were not hurt in the incident.
In video of the scene, crews can be seen using a skid steer to scrape the spilled squid off of the roadway. The road was reopened at about 5:30 p.m., about seven hours after the incident.
Witnesses say that the spill was “foul smelling” as the squid was left to heat up in the summer sun.
“Squid has a distinctive odor to it, I’m a fisherman and I use squid for bait. I’m quite used to it, but it can be very foul-smelling especially if it lies on the road and stays there for a while. The fire department is doing a great job cleaning thing up as best they can,” a neighbor said to Turnto10.
The truck has since been towed away. It is unclear if any citations were issued as a result of the accident.
