The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is warning truckers that they could face criminal prosecution for toll evasion tactics like obscuring a license plate.
On April 15, Ohio Turnpike officials announced a partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) to crack down on toll evasion by commercial truck drivers.
OSHP troopers will patrol the Ohio Turnpike “on the lookout for commercial truck drivers who cover up, obscure or remove their license plates to avoid paying tolls.”
Turnpike officials say that nearly 100 commercial truck drivers have been charged with failure to display a license plate and/or toll evasion so far in 2026.
Additionally, some commercial trucks have been impounded as part of investigations into toll evasion on the Turnpike.
“Toll evaders may be criminally prosecuted and face possible civil litigation by the Commission. Ohio Administrative Code 5537-4-02 (Evasion of toll.) defines regulations against evading tolls on the Ohio Turnpike. Effective Sept. 1, 2023, this rule prohibits purposefully defrauding the Commission, altering toll collection equipment or knowingly avoiding toll payments,” the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission said in a social media post.
