Truck driver charged after causing eight crashes on I-57 and attempting to strangle motorist, Illinois troopers say

A semi truck driver is facing numerous charges connected to a suspected road rage incident on a busy Illinois interstate, according to state police.

On April 28, 2026, Illinois State Police (ISP) responded to I-57 northbound in Chicago for reports of multiple crashes.

Troopers say that Hassan A. Moutassim of Jersey City, New Jersey, 25, “allegedly drove his semi-truck recklessly on I-57 northbound resulting in eight separate crashes.”

After the final crash near Halsted Street, ISP said that Moutassim exited his truck and removed another driver from one of the crashed vehicles. Troopers say that Moutassim assaulted and even attempted to strangle the driver.

The victim was hospitalized with injuries.

Moutassim has since been charged with Attempted Murder (Class X Felony), Aggravated Battery on a Public Way (Class 3 Felony), and Aggravated Battery-Strangulation (Class 3 Felony).

“ISP reminds the public that when it comes to aggressive driving, don’t lose your temper or your life. Road Rage. Don’t Engage. If you are the victim of road rage or believe a driver is following or harassing you, call 911 and/or go to the nearest police department to report it,” said state police.
