A truck driver was arrested in connection with a property damage crash that resulted in a power outage in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
The incident occurred on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
From the Excelsior Springs Police Department (ESPD):
“This driver decided it would be a good idea to ‘just give it a try,’ snagging his excavator’s boom on the overhead power lines across Hwy 92. Instead of reversing and finding an alternate route, he decided to step on the gas and try to power through!”
The power line strike caused utility poles to topple and left some customers without power.
“And the “best” part? He decided to flee the scene! Not only did he leave a portion of our community in the dark, but he also caused an estimated nearly $100,000 in damages,” police said.
Investigators identified a person of interest and were able to locate the excavator on July 13.
On July 14, search warrants were served. The truck driver was placed under arrest and is awaiting formal charges.
“Had this driver simply stayed at the scene, this situation likely would have remained a civil matter between himself and the utility companies. By fleeing, he turned a civil issue into criminal charges for leaving the scene of an accident and felony property damage,” ESPD said.
