Truck driver loses control on winding mountain roadway in Arizona, crashes down ‘steep ravine’

Arizona troopers responded to a crash that left a semi truck in a precarious position off US-60 earlier this month.

The crash occurred on August 16, 2026, on US-60 outside of Whiteriver, Arizona.

When Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol (AZDPS) troopers arrived at the scene, they found that a semi truck loaded with 40,000 pounds of cheese “had clipped a guardrail and was face down in a drop off.”

The crash broke open the semi truck’s trailer and caused the load of cheese to spill out onto the ground.

“During the investigation, Troopers found that the semi failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and went straight, running off the road to the right, through the end of the guardrail, over a pile of large boulders, through the right-of-way fence, before going down a steep ravine. The semi driver claimed he swerved to miss an animal, but the investigation considered fatigue may have been a factor,” AZDPS said.

Officials asked drivers to slow down, stay alert, and make sure you’re good to drive, especially on “winding mountain roads.”
