Truck driver sentenced for fleeing scene after striking bicyclist on Oklahoma Native American reservation

A truck driver was sentenced to prison after striking a person on a bicycle on a Native American reservation and then leaving the scene.

Oklahoma resident Lee Calhoun Phillips, 46, was 18 months in prison for one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Nonfatal Injury in “Indian Country,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

Phillips pleaded guilty to federal charges in July 2025.

The bicycle strike occurred on September 28, 2023, south of Haskell, Oklahoma, within the boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Reservation.

Officials say that Phillips was driving a Peterbilt westbound on Highway 16 when he hit a bicyclist, and then left the scene without stopping to check on the victim or rendering aid.

The victim was found by two Oklahoma Department of Transportation workers, who stayed on the scene until emergency personnel arrived.

Following sentencing, Phillips was handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve his non-paroleable sentence.

This case was investigated by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
