A truck driver is facing charges after an incident at a toll plaza along the Indiana Toll Road on Tuesday.
Shortly before 11 a.m. on June 30, 2026, an Indiana State Police (ISP) trooper responded to the Portage Barrier Toll Plaza located at mile marker 24 on the Indiana Toll Road.
The trooper was dispatched to respond to the driver of a white 2026 Volvo semi truck who refused to pay the toll.
When the trooper arrived, he attempted to gather information from the truck driver so she could pay the toll later.
During their interaction, the trooper warned the Volvo driver that providing him with false information was a misdemeanor.
In spite of the warning, the driver, later identified as Shalaia Martin, 38, of Houston, Texas, did provide false identifying information to the trooper, according to ISP.
“When the trooper discovered he had been given false identifying information he attempted to take Martin into custody and she began to resist arrest. Several other troopers arrived and Martin was taken into custody without injury,” ISP said.
ISP troopers later discovered synthetic urine and marijuana in the cab of the truck.
Martin was ticketed for the unpaid toll.
Martin was booked into the Porter County Jail on charges of False Informing, Resisting Law Enforcement, Possession of Synthetic Urine, and Possession of Marijuana.
“What simply could have been providing accurate information and moving on resulted in the driver of a semi being arrested for multiple charges and being taken to the Porter County Jail,” troopers said.
