Truckers will pay more to use the Kansas Turnpike starting in September

The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) announced a toll increase for passenger and commercial vehicle drivers going into effect in just a couple of weeks.

Effective September 1, 2026, the KTA will increase tolls by 3% for passenger vehicles (1-4 axles) and 4% for commercial vehicles (5+ axles).

The current toll rate for a 5-axle truck to travel the entire Kansas Turnpike is $32.69 for K-Tag users and $65.38 for license plate customers. The current per mile rate for a 5-axle truck is $0.138 for K-Tag users and $0.276 for license plate customers.

This is the first toll increase on the Kansas Turnpike since 2022.

Officials say that the toll increases will help to fund a nearly $500 million project to upgrade the 236-mile Turnpike system.

Planned upgrades include:

“For seven decades, Kansans have counted on the turnpike to provide reliable transportation,” said Steve Hewitt, CEO of the Kansas Turnpike Authority. “Our responsibility is to preserve what works, modernize where needed and prepare the system for future demands. This investment plan allows us to continue delivering the safe, reliable experience customers expect while positioning the turnpike for the next generation of travelers.”

“Long-term infrastructure requires long-term planning,” Hewitt said. “The investments outlined in this plan were carefully evaluated and prioritized based on system needs, customer benefits and future growth. By planning ahead today, we’re helping keep the Kansas Turnpike safe, reliable and ready to serve Kansas for decades to come.”
