Two dead after crashing into slow-moving semi truck with ‘engine difficulties,’ CHP says

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating a crash that killed a mother and daughter in Madera over the weekend.

Just before 2 a.m. on July 18, CHP responded to SR-152 at Road 14 ½ for a reported two-vehicle crash.

CHP investigators said that a white 2019 Freightliner Cascadia semi truck operated by a 32-year-old Fresno resident was eastbound on SR-152, approaching Road 14 ½.

The semi truck was traveling in the number 2 lane. Because the vehicle was experiencing “engine difficulties,” the truck was traveling at speeds of 10 m.p.h. to 15 m.p.h. with hazard lights activated, troopers said.

A black Honda Clarity, also traveling eastbound on SR-152, approached the rear of the truck in the number 2 lane.

“For reasons still under investigation, the 50-year-old driver collided into the rear of the Freightliner’s trailer. Due to the severity of the impact, the Honda became wedged under the rear of the trailer. After the impact, the 32-year-old drove to the right shoulder, unaware the Honda was trapped beneath the rear of the trailer,” CHP said.

Medical attention was provided, but the Honda driver and her 17-year-old daughter died at the scene.

The truck driver was not injured.

CHP said that all parties were wearing seatbelts.

A toxicology report is pending to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

“Their story is a heartbreaking reminder that every trip matters. Before you turn the key, make a commitment to drive safely. Slow down, stay focused, buckle up, and never drive impaired. Let’s work together to prevent another family from experiencing this kind of loss,” CHP said.
